Possible tariff price rises on amateur gear from USA?
Following President Trump’s imposition of tariffs (additional import taxes) on imports from the UK, the UK government has published a 417 page list of American products we import. Potentially some would be subject to UK tariffs if the UK and US do not come to a trade deal. It seem likely that any tariffs would, at least initially, target products from so-called red states that voted for Trump’s Republican party. The US now puts a 10% tariff tax on most UK imports and any UK tariffs could match those, putting the cost of imports up by 10%, which come on top of recent price rises.
The list includes “Apparatus for the transmission or reception of voice, images or other data”. Might this catch Texas-based Flex, Elecraft and other American manufacturers, including those making QRP radios? Also on the list are antennas, microphones, “Headphones and earphones, whether or not combined with microphone”, loudspeakers, audio amplifiers (although radio-frequency amplifiers somehow don’t seem to be on the list).
Lots of electronic components are on the list, so there is a potential knock-on for products made in the UK. Computers may be at risk too – although the Dell computer this article is being written on was made in China and sold by Dell of Limerick, Ireland. It appears that US goods manufactured in China could be hit twice over if sold from the US – once by Chinese tariffs on parts imports from the US and again by US tariffs on imports from China.
